October 2, Chennai: Building on the competitive spirit they showcased in their last outing, the UP Yoddhas now shift focus to Dabang Delhi as they continue their Chennai leg at the SDAT Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium, Chennai, on October 3, with action kicking off at 8:00 pm IST in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
The Yoddhas fell short in a 27-33 result against Gujarat Giants, but the contest reflected their grit and balance across both raiding and defensive departments. With several key players stepping up, the team will aim to translate that effort into a strong comeback against Delhi.
Gagan Gowda will once again be central to the Yoddhas’ attacking plans, having consistently delivered in recent outings. His sharp raids, combined with the versatility of Bhavani Rajput, give the team a dual threat that can stretch any defensive setup. Add to that the experience of Guman Singh and the energy of youngster Shivam Chaudhary, and the Yoddhas enter the Delhi clash with a well-rounded raiding arsenal capable of striking at crucial junctures.
Defensively, skipper Sumit Sangwan’s leadership and anticipation will be instrumental as the side looks to keep Delhi’s raiders in check. Vice-captain Ashu Singh’s grit and the steadiness of Mahender Singh further strengthen a backline that has shown the ability to operate as a disciplined and cohesive unit. Their task will be to convert pressure situations into tackle points, a factor that could swing momentum in Chennai.
By the numbers, the Yoddhas have held their own in raiding exchanges, with strike rates matching the league’s top teams. What they will look to sharpen against Delhi is their defensive conversion, ensuring that those half-chances in tackles turn into decisive points. If they can marry their attacking variety with a tighter backline, the Yoddhas are well placed to make a strong statement in this encounter.
Speaking ahead of the clash, assistant coach Upendra Malik expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back, saying, “We had phases where the boys played some very strong kabaddi, and that’s something we will carry forward. Delhi are a competitive outfit, but if we play with the same unity and energy that we showed in parts against Gujarat, the results will follow.”
Dabang Delhi are currently at the top of the standings, having won eight of their nine games thus far. However, with the Yoddhas showing steady improvement and maintaining balance in both attack and defence, this contest presents another opportunity to turn effort into results and notch up a vital victory in the Chennai leg.
